What should I do when the alarm is sounding?
First, check to ensure there is no actual fire and confirm your safety.

The alarm may be detecting smoke from cigarettes, cooking fish, steam from cooking or bathing, or dust.

⇒ To stop the alarm, press the alarm stop button or pull the cord.
Note that if smoke (remains inside the alarm) persists, it may sound again after a certain period (5-15 minutes).

[About alarm sounds]
① Generally, "Beep-Beep-Beep" indicates fire detection or test operation.
② If it makes intermittent "Beep, Beep, Beep" sounds at intervals, it indicates malfunction. Replace the device.

In any case, please contact the manufacturer or retailer listed in the instruction manual or on the back of the residential fire alarm device.

How should I dispose of aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers?
After thoroughly checking that there is no abnormality such as corrosion on the exterior, completely discharge the fire extinguishing agent and gas in a safe place, similar to insecticide or cosmetic spray cans.

[General disposal method: For liquid types]
① In a safe outdoor location with no people around, place several folded sheets of newspaper in a large plastic bag, and discharge the entire amount of fire extinguishing agent and gas while letting the newspaper absorb the agent.
⇒ If the agent gets on your skin, wash with water.
If it gets in your eyes, rinse with water and seek medical attention.
② Dispose of the newspaper that absorbed the agent as combustible waste, and dispose of the container according to your municipality's waste sorting guidelines.
⇒ Disposal methods with photos are available on manufacturers' websites.
*For fire extinguishing agents containing Halon, please check with the manufacturer or your municipality's environmental/cleaning department.

What kind of services does the Japan Fire Equipment Inspection Institute provide?

We conduct inspection, performance evaluation, and commissioned evaluation of firefighting equipment and machinery. Please see each section for details about our services.

Please tell me about the inspection process.

The inspection of firefighting equipment and machinery is stipulated in Article 21-2 of the Fire Service Act. For important firefighting equipment related to fire prevention, firefighting, and lifesaving, inspection organizations like our institute conduct tests and inspections based on type approval from the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications. Items that have not passed these inspections cannot be sold, displayed for sale purposes, or used in construction work.

The following 12 items are subject to inspection:
- Fire extinguishing equipment (fire extinguishers, fire extinguishing agents, closed sprinkler heads, etc.)
- Warning equipment (detectors, receivers, etc.)
- Evacuation equipment (metal escape ladders, descending lifelines)
- Residential disaster warning devices
Please tell me about performance evaluation.

Performance evaluation of special fire protection equipment is conducted when applicants seeking approval from the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications request evaluation of the performance of special fire protection equipment as stipulated in Article 17 of the Fire Service Act.

Please tell me about commissioned evaluation.

Commissioned evaluation of firefighting equipment and machinery establishes technical standards for items not subject to inspection, and upon request, determines whether their structure and performance meet these standards. It is divided into three categories: quality evaluation, certification evaluation, and specific equipment evaluation.

Please tell me about quality evaluation.

For important firefighting equipment not subject to inspection, we conduct tests and inspections based on technical standards specified by ministerial ordinances, notifications, and circulars, determining whether their structure and performance meet these standards upon request.

Target items:
- Residential sprinkler systems
- Aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers
- Special equipment for fire trucks, etc.
Please tell me about certification evaluation.

We determine whether firefighting equipment meets technical standards, conduct tests and inspections, and attach certification labels to items that meet the standards. Items with these labels do not require individual performance testing during fire inspection at installation.

Target items (8 items):
- District sound equipment for automatic fire alarm systems
- Emergency bells and automatic sirens for emergency warning systems
- Broadcasting equipment for emergency warning systems
- Comprehensive operation panels
- Package-type automatic fire extinguishing systems
- Sprinkler systems using water spray heads
- Indoor fire hydrant systems, etc.
- Foam fire extinguishing systems for specific parking facilities
Please tell me about specific equipment evaluation.

Upon request, we evaluate whether items that have excellent functions as firefighting equipment through new technology but lack technical standards meet certain performance levels.

Evaluation track record:
- Fixed installation type fire extinguishing equipment
- Impulse fire extinguishing guns
- Fire detection heads
- Detector lifters
- Descending devices, etc.
I want to know if the certified product installed has an expired model number?

Please check the "Model Number Expiration Status" under "Model Information" on this website.

I want to dispose of an old fire extinguisher. What should I do?
Some fire extinguishers contain high internal pressure, so improper handling can be dangerous.

It is dangerous to leave unwanted fire extinguishers for long periods allowing the container to corrode, dispose of them as general waste, or dismantle them yourself. Please consult with fire extinguisher dealers, inspection companies, or other fire extinguisher handling professionals.

Fire extinguishers have a service life indicated. Can they not be used after the service life has expired?

While the lifespan of fire extinguishers may vary depending on installation conditions and inspections, for your safety, we recommend replacing fire extinguishers that have exceeded their service life with new ones.

Can residential fire extinguishers not be used after their expiration date?

For your safety, we recommend replacing expired units with new ones.

How can I obtain the standards for firefighting equipment subject to certification?

You can view them in the "Fire Prevention Laws and Regulations" section under "For Fire Prevention Personnel" on the Fire and Disaster Management Agency website.

How can I verify if an item is certified?

Check for the certification label shown in the Certification Services section under "About Our Services" on this website. Also, please verify the model number through the "Model Search" in "Model Information".

Please explain the application process for firefighting equipment subject to certification.

Certification consists of model approval (by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications) and model conformity inspection. For model approval, our association conducts product testing on samples, and based on the results, models that conform are granted approval by the Minister.

Next, model conformity inspection is conducted on mass-produced products to verify they are identical to the approved model, and those that pass receive certification labels.
For more details, please see Certification Services on this website.
Please tell me about the fees required for firefighting equipment certification applications.

The fees for testing and model conformity inspection of firefighting equipment conducted by our association are set with approval from the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications.

For details, please see the "Fees" section under Document Downloads on this website.
What is the difference between fire extinguishers and aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers?

Fire extinguishers are those that comply with the "Ministerial Ordinance on Technical Standards for Fire Extinguishers" and have passed certification.

Characteristics of aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers:
- Smaller than fire extinguishers (internal volume of 1 liter or less)
- Cannot be refilled
- Effective for fires involving kerosene stoves, cooking oil, etc.

Our association conducts evaluation of aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers based on evaluation criteria established by Fire and Disaster Management Agency notifications.
I want to obtain NS certification for an aerosol-type simple fire extinguisher. What should I do?

The evaluation of aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers consists of model evaluation and model conformity evaluation.

Evaluation process:
1. Model evaluation: Product testing is conducted on samples, and models that pass are granted certification.
2. Model conformity evaluation: Mass-produced products are evaluated to verify they conform to the sample's specifications, and those that pass can display the conformity mark.
Can we use the NS mark in leaflets, brochures, or public relations magazines as part of awareness activities or to recommend aerosol-type simple fire extinguishers to general consumers?

Please feel free to use it to promote greater awareness of home fire prevention measures.

Please consult the Planning and Research Department regarding NS mark displays for printing.
